Although the infamous Duke University lacrosse scandal is long gone and mostly forgotten, there are still people interested in it and people ready to use this interest. Among them – William D. Cohan, the author of a new and very thorough retelling (it cannot be called investigation per se) of this story, â€Å"The Price of Silence†. Back in 2006, the public was immediately attracted to the case’s unpleasant nature: an African American student of North Carolina Central University who also worked as a stripper, dancer and escort, accused three white Duke lacrosse players of raping her at a party organized by the team’s captains. The case was quickly labeled as a hate crime, but later it was revealed that accusations were, in fact, false – the investigation uncovered a lot of inconsistencies in the accuser’s interpretations of events, and the defendants were found innocent. William D. Cohan didn’t uncover any new evidence and doesn’t make any allegations in this respect. But this, however, doesn’t make the story he tells any less fascinating. First of all, he introduced a lot of new details into it, and although these details don’t change the overall picture, they let the reader get a better understanding of what happened in Duke back in 2006. This allows to flesh out the personalities of the people involved in the case, thus making them look like real individuals to the reader. However, although Cohan’s account makes for a rather fascinating reading and the amount of work he did calls for due respect, in some aspects the book can be found somewhat wanting. For example, the multitude of new details adds to the case, but the author didn’t seem to make a lot of work structuring and organizing them. Sometimes it looks as if he tried to include everything he managed to find without taking into account whether this particular bit of information was all that relevant. For example, he informs us about the nickname of Mike Nifong’s (the initial prosecutor) father, the classes that Richard Broadhead, Duke’s president, took during his study at Yale, and so forth. Needless to say, all these things have from little to nothing to do with the subject matter, and needlessly clutter the text. Another peculiar aspect of Cohan’s book is that he largely avoids making his own assumptions and performing his own analysis. He gives you a lot of information, some of which cannot be found anywhere but in this book, and allows you to draw your own conclusions. Some will be refreshed by the author’s not trying to impose his point of view, but there certainly will be a number of readers to find this approach disappointing. In other words: if you are interested in the lacrosse scandal case, it is a thing for you to read; just don’t expect particular revelations.

To establish a new business, it would be necessary to do some critical market research and while doing so various facts became clear to me and little did I know about these horrible facts regarding the rate of employment or the harassment of the aged employees. Preparing the business proposal took 3 weeks and the process was quite less time consuming as creating a great idea for a business was a bit of tough job. After chalking out the business proposal, I took 4 weeks to write the literature regarding various types of employment and how employment rate gets influenced by the age and gender of the candidates. After writing the literature, it was time to collect the primary data to analyze the factors and to attain a result for the research work. Data collection and the analyzing the data took 4 weeks to get completed. While doing the research work regarding the relation between part time and full time employment types, I got to know that there are several instances where the individuals get judged by people on the basis of their employment types. This is something unacceptable in todays world because, just like the full timers take full responsibility of their job, the part timer employees also take full responsibility at the workplace. The part timers serve 30 hours a week and the part timers devote more than 35 hours a week, and apart from that there are some difference in the salary structure and the perks that the full time employees get and the part timers do not (Fagan et al. 2015). In this context I believe it is worth mentioning that at the time of global recession, the big organizations sustained their existence by using a huge part time workforce to generate the desired productivity bearing lower company liability and thus the importance of the part timers must not be overlooked (Wanberg et al. 2016). When I was gathering the data by interviewing individuals, I got to know that there are several instances where after quitting a job when individuals of the age group (50 to 60 years) goes for an interview, in most cases they are looked at differently and gets judged on the basis of their age. Not only that, at times the individuals who are employed but falls under the elder age group receive less favor than the younger employees of that concern (Darolia 2014). This should not be done, as in recruitment process; the management should judge them on the basis of their level of competence and behavior. The things get worse when a female candidate who falls under the age group of 50 to 60 years goes for an interview. In this type of cases, the harassment those individuals have to bear are unimaginable and I find it very annoying. These practices should be stopped immediately and the government needs amend some laws regarding this issue soon. While collecting the data, another issue attracted my attention and that is the rate of employment gets influenced by the gender of the candidate. This is something that should not exist in the society as we live in a society where gender equality is one of the most important pillars of the formation of the society. In some nations where the level of education is on the lower end, these things happen, but when same thing occurs in the developing or an already developed country, it becomes a matter of concern (Chambel et al. 2016). It is seen how in developed countries of Europe, the rate of employment gets negatively influenced when it comes to hiring women for part time or full time jobs. This is something that can generate excruciating pain in the back of the mind and can potentially harm the level of confidence of the candidates. It is worth mentioning that the gender gaps in the rate of employment are not same in all the socio-economic groups. It is seen that mostly the women who belongs from families with lower spending capability faces these challenges in most cases (Abel, Deitz and Su 2014). These practices are blunt example of discriminations in the society and these things needs to be stopped immediately. After collecting all the necessary primary data, it took almost 4 weeks to analyze them and to come to a conclusion. While analyzing the data I was shocked to see the percentage of individuals who faced challenges in the workplace on the basis of their type of employment, their age and above all on the basis of their gender. This is something I found ridiculous and I strongly advocate the recruitment process where the level of competence of the candidate and the behavioral issues should be the only criterion of judging someone. Apart from that I strongly believe that the employed individuals should file a complaint to the authority or if needed, they should take legal help if they face any challenges in the workplace regarding their gender or age. These malpractices are pulling the society backwards and these sorts of practices needs to be stopped immediately. After analyzing the collected data, it took almost 7 weeks to complete the business report regarding the topic of relation between part time and full time employment under the light of the gender and age influenced rate of employment. This is becoming a social ill day by day and I believe that these activities are becoming the major hurdles in the path of progress of the society. I believe that completely eradicating these practices will require adequate time. Thus to conclude, it can be said that judging people on the basis of their age, gender or employment types is becoming a social ill day by day and these practices needs to be stopped immediately. He continued with the Yankees system until 1978. He ended up with winning the Eastern League pennant and championship with the club in West Haven in '72 and with the Syracuse club won the International League's Governor's Cup in '76. His last year with the Yankees he was the first base coach before going to manage the Braves. In Atlanta Cox stayed for 3 years, 1978 to 1981. He built the Braves up to be replaced before he could take them to the 1982 National League West title. His next endeavor was to bring a team up basically from the ground. In 1982, Cox was given four years to manage at Toronto. He was given the task of building a winner out of the returning last place team. His first season, he coached them to gain their best record since the Blue Jays birth. It was only a mere 78 wins to 84 losses but it was still a big accomplishment. The next two following seasons, Toronto still improved their record to a winning one with 89 wins to 73 losses which gave them seventh place. With one more win would have given the team a 1985 World Series first. From Toronto, Cox returned to Atlanta. In October of 1985, he was the General Manager with lots of different responsibilities. This time around he was to supervise a farm team giving us some of our superstars today. Also, accumulating the right to manage the field starting in June of '90. John Schuerholz was then given the General Manager spot in October of '90. Since then Bobby Cox has been the field manager for the best team of the nineties. The Braves went from worst to first and have even brought Brave fans a desired World Championship. Throughout his ten-year stay with the famed Atlanta team he's won eight straight Division titles with the exception of 1994 because of the baseball strike. They've also been in 5 World Series but only came out with one win. In 1992 he lost in the World Series to none other than the Toronto Blue Jays. His post-season record of 43 to 36 and a .544 winning percentage. That gives Bobby Cox the most wins in the post season by a manager. He has more wins than such great managers as Casey Stengel and Tommy Lasorda. Yet still, he has only been recognized once as a tremendous manager. He won National League Manger of The Year in 1991. They were: clarifying the assignment, specifying the employees range of discretion, allow the employees to participate, inform others that delegation has occurred, and establish proper feedback channels. In this paper, each behavior will be discussed as used in the scenario, and will give specific detail of how we as managers would have handled the delegation. Clarity of the assignment, is providing clear expectations of an assignment with details, deadlines, an audience, and the importance of the assignment being done on time. This is the first step in the delegation process of the project. If we ask someone to complete one of our assignments, we would want to be sure that the assignment is done the way we would have completed it. Theres a reason why we asked that particular person. If it was something anyone could do you can ask for volunteers. Informing others that delegation has occurred is essential behavior in the delegation process. Obviously Ricky has other employees that he manages. So it is important to inform those employees about the delegation as well. He chose Bill because of his three year experience in the contracts group. However, there isnt any mention of addressing Rickys other employees. Since he assigned Bill to this project what about Bills daily duties? Is Ricky going to provide Bill with help in regards to his daily work, or will he be required to complete both the project and his work? Thats what we do not know, but they were having a meeting in the morning to discuss the assignment. These are issues Ricky has to figure out now, along with informing his staff, because if Ricky did not inform his other employees, they may perceive it as favoritism and think he is trying to hide it from everyone. Ricky should also inform Bill of the reasons he chose him at their meeting in the morning, and also let him know he will be communicating the project to the rest of the team so they are aware Bill will be working on the assignment for the given time frame. Normally in those situations you look to the person who may be capable of doing the job based on previous experience. It is important to share the wealth when it comes to delegating task to the staff. I would assume that Bill is one of the go-to guys that can and is able to complete task with assigned deadlines. However, the behavior skills that stick out to me the most are clarify the assignment, inform others that the delegation has occurred, and establish feedback channel. It is important that Ricky clarifies with Anne what the guidelines for the new manual are so that he can clearly communicate them Bill. Setting up one-on-one sessions or a team meeting will be useful to inform all team members of the decision. Lastly, Ricky should set up periodic reviews with Bill to check on his progress and also see if any assistance is needed. agree that some of the delegation skills where used in this scenario, but not all were used fully. Obviously there was a reason why she asked him, so when he requested Bill to replace him why did she allow it? If I delegate an assignment to my employee I want the person to do what I asked. I remember an old saying form a manager I had who would say, inspect what you expect! We are tasked to ensure what we empower our workforce to accomplish is completed the way we expect it to be done. However, if we do not adequately communicate our expectations to the employee, than how will we be able to hold them reliable for the job. Now, am I saying we should micro-manage? Never! And im sure no body wants to spend time micro-managing. What we do want to ensure though is task completion and work from a decentralized form of management so the employee doesnt get frustrated in their job. Bottom line, we empower people everyday, the question is how much do we trust them? Allow the employee to participate. We have that found the employees participation is the best means to empower them not only in their job, but it gives them personal satisfaction. Now, this can be somewhat dangerous because you never want to give them an unchecked decision machine. As the section mention, you allow the employee to participate in that decision and then a set limit of authority is transferred to them for the project. We know, from experience that you must maintain that channel of communication with the employee so to keep them on the right direction. This will be training opportunities for managers with the employee in how to better make decisions without being biased. I know it can be challenging at times and personal matters may strive to cloud our decision process, but over time the employee will learn how to set aside personal reasoning.

Majority Rule According to John C. Calhoun’s â€Å"Disquisition on Government†, Rousseau’s ideas were wrong. Unlike Rousseau, Calhoun believes that man is more self-interested than socially interested therefore Rousseau’s idea of a sovereign making a fair general interest decision obsolete. Calhoun acknowledges the fact that in any society there has to be a decision making procedure and a form of power. He then explains how that power will naturally make self-interest a priority. Calhoun breaks up the decision making process of voting into two different categories, numerical/absolute majority and constitutional/concurrent majority. Calhoun stresses the fact that there is a major difference between these two and â€Å"that they cannot be confounded without leading to great and fatal errors†. Numerical majority is described as a majority of numbers, which does not consider the actual people who make up this â€Å"so called† majority. Mr. Calhoun insists that confounding the two majorities and considering numerical majority as the only majority will in fact tear apart the popular government. Instead he explicates the importance of every persons opinion, this is what is so overlooked in a majority rule, because there are more numbers does not make that a right majority. A majority is most often in control or heavily involved with its government. Calhoun explains that if a constitution is made to be easily changed to limit the powers of some departments, as well as this may seem, can cause harm. A majority that is limited by one of these provisions will find it easier to do away with these provisions because of their numbers, while the minority will not have the ability to keep the provisions. These beliefs are easily correlated with the issues of states rights during the civil war. I agree with Calhoun and his beliefs of majority. Although our nation today is prosperous this does not make the decisions of and other events in our country right. We have almost lost touch with many groups and simply dubbed them the minority.

According to ( Volkomer; pg. 113) â€Å"the term â€Å"lobbyists† was first used several centuries ago in Great Britain when journalists would sit in the lobbies of the House of Commons waiting to interview legislators.† Most lobbyists are known to be practicing lawyers and public relation experts that are affiliated with large firms in Washington. Most are former members of congress and administrators who have worked in the executive branch. With their knowledge and personal contacts they know how congress agencies function and that’s how they end up persuading congress members. I am sure there might be dangers to lobbyists who try to influence legislators. Some dangers have been being prosecuted for bribery and corruption. This is why they made rules so that these lobbyists could not engage in personal relations or interactions with congressmen. They are not allowed to take them out to dinner, buy them expensive gifts or lavish them with expensive trips.
